Duafe Sisterhood - A Project in Action

October turned out to be an extraordinary month, full of remarkable events, especially within the Duafe Sisterhood educational program. When we launched this project in 2019, we couldn’t have imagined, even in our wildest dreams, that our clubs would operate simultaneously in so many locations – in Ghana, the United States, and Poland – inspiring young girls to actively advocate for women's rights.

Duafe Sisterhood reached two remote regions of Ghana, where we managed to train nearly 200 participants, and our team welcomed 30 dedicated volunteers. We collaborated with CORM, an organization that has been supporting victims of human trafficking and displaced persons for years, as well as with Spurse, a young organization operating in rural areas of the Volta region. As part of the Duafe initiative, we implemented an innovative educational program aimed at 75 boys. The workshops addressed key topics such as: what every man should know about menstruation, addiction and self-control, and sexual education tailored for boys.

In October, the key topic was breast cancer prevention. Several meetings on this subject were held as part of our Duafe Sisterhood club. Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide, and in countries of the Global South, it poses a significant threat to women's health. In Ghana, especially in rural areas, limited access to information, screening, and healthcare makes prevention and early detection of cancer crucial. In this context, initiatives like the Duafe Sisterhood after-school clubs play an important role in educating and raising awareness among young girls about breast health.
Duafe Sisterhood – Education Through Support and Action

Duafe Sisterhood initiated this initiative last year in collaboration with the medical staff of a local clinic. The meetings place a strong emphasis on health education, including breast cancer prevention. The educational programs in Duafe Sisterhood clubs include:
  • Teaching Breast Self-Examination

The girls learn how to regularly check their breasts and what symptoms should raise concern.
  • Workshops with Experts

Doctors and nurses visit the clubs to talk about prevention, symptoms, and treatment options for breast cancer.
  • Breaking Stereotypes and Myths

Participants learn that early detection of cancer significantly increases the chances of recovery and that breast health should not be a taboo subject.
  • Community Outreach Initiatives

The girls become health ambassadors in their villages, sharing their knowledge with their families and neighbors.
The Impact of Education on Future Generations

Thanks to initiatives like Duafe Sisterhood, we are changing the approach to women's health in rural areas of Ghana. Educating young girls leads to greater awareness within entire communities. The girls who gain knowledge in the clubs often share it with their mothers and other women, resulting in a gradual shift in the perception of breast cancer prevention.
The commitment to education and supporting local communities demonstrates that even small actions can have a huge impact on the health and lives of many people. October was a month full of inspiration and motivation for us to continue working for the well-being of women and girls in Ghana and beyond.
